New Delhi: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has approved a total of 18.77 lakh houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0), strengthening the Centre’s efforts to expand access to safe and affordable housing for eligible urban families.
The decision was taken during the 9th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) held in New Delhi on September 10, 2026, under the chairmanship of Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development, MoHUA. Senior officials from the Ministry and Mission Directors from participating States also attended the meeting.
Over 29,000 Houses Approved in Six States
During the latest CSMC meeting, more than 29,000 houses were approved under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) verticals of PMAY-U 2.0. The approvals cover Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing representatives of the States, the Secretary, Urban Development, stressed the need for timely and effective implementation and regular monitoring of PMAY-U 2.0. He directed that implementation bottlenecks should be identified promptly and resolved in consultation with States and Union Territories.
The Ministry has also decided that CSMC meetings will be convened every second week of the month to maintain regular monitoring and accelerate the pace of approvals and implementation. States and UTs have been advised to submit duly approved projects by the end of each month so that they can be considered and sanctioned in subsequent CSMC meetings.
PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 Cross 1.25 Crore Sanctions
PMAY-U 2.0 provides housing assistance to eligible Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Low Income Group (LIG) and Middle Income Group (MIG) families through multiple verticals. Beneficiaries can construct their own pucca houses, purchase homes in affordable housing projects, access affordable rental housing or avail interest subsidy on eligible housing loans.
According to MoHUA, the combined progress of PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 has crossed 1.25 crore sanctioned houses, with more than 1 crore houses completed and delivered to beneficiaries.
The scheme targets households with annual incomes of up to ₹9 lakh, supporting their transition from kutcha, inadequate or rented accommodation to safe and dignified housing.
Strong Focus on Women and Vulnerable Groups
Women’s ownership remains a major component of the scheme. Of the 18.77 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, 17.19 lakh houses—or 92%—have been allotted to women, either in their name or through joint ownership.
The scheme has also extended housing support to vulnerable sections. The Ministry reported that 1.80 lakh houses have been allotted to senior citizens, while 3.25 lakh houses have been sanctioned for SC beneficiaries, 1.02 lakh for ST beneficiaries and 8.22 lakh for OBC beneficiaries.
With PMAY-U 2.0 sanctions approaching the 20-lakh milestone, the latest CSMC decisions mark another step towards the government’s objective of ensuring access to secure, affordable and dignified housing for eligible urban families.
