New Delhi | Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal has called for replacing the term “Central Vista area” with “Kartavya Bhavan area” in all official government records and communications. The announcement was made while addressing the foundation day function of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).
The minister said the terminology associated with the Central Vista precinct should reflect the transformation that has taken place in the administrative district over the past few years. According to him, the phrase “Central Vista” should no longer be used in government documentation, and the area encompassing India Gate, the Central Secretariat offices, and Rashtrapati Bhavan should instead be referred to as the “Kartavya Bhavan area.”
Speaking at the event, Manohar Lal stated that the name had changed with the development of new government office buildings and that future official correspondence should adopt the updated terminology. He noted that several new government office complexes have already been named Kartavya Bhavans, with more buildings expected to be added in the coming years.
The proposal follows a series of renaming initiatives undertaken as part of the Central Vista redevelopment programme. On 8 September 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially renamed the historic Rajpath as Kartavya Path, describing it as an effort to remove colonial-era symbols and reinforce the importance of citizens’ duties. Since then, newly constructed government office buildings along the ceremonial boulevard have been designated as Kartavya Bhavans, while the new administrative complex housing the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Cabinet Secretariat, and the National Security Advisor’s Office has been named Seva Teerth.
The latest proposal signals another step in aligning the nomenclature of India’s premier administrative precinct with the government’s broader vision for the redeveloped Central Vista district. If implemented, the revised name would become the standard reference for official records, government communications, and administrative documentation concerning the area.
