Central Vista Metro Corridor to Reduce Rajiv Chowk Crowding, Improve Delhi Connectivity

New Delhi: The upcoming Central Vista Metro Corridor is set to transform travel in the heart of the national capital by reducing congestion at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station and providing commuters with multiple new route options. The 9.9-kilometre corridor, currently under construction between Indraprastha and RK Ashram Marg, will become a crucial addition to Delhi Metro’s expanding network.

The new corridor will feature nine stations, including four major interchange stations at RK Ashram Marg, Indraprastha, Shivaji Stadium, and Central Secretariat. Once completed, Central Secretariat will emerge as a triple-interchange station connecting the Yellow, Violet, and Magenta Lines under the Delhi Metro Phase V(A) expansion.

To further improve passenger movement, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed a dedicated subway linking Rajiv Chowk and Shivaji Stadium stations. This connection will facilitate seamless transfers between the Airport Express Line, Yellow Line, and Blue Line, reducing travel time and enhancing commuter convenience.

According to DMRC officials, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce passenger pressure at Rajiv Chowk, one of the busiest stations in the Delhi Metro network. Commuters travelling from Noida and Vaishali towards Central Vista destinations will be able to interchange at Indraprastha, while passengers coming from Dwarka and western parts of Delhi can switch lines at RK Ashram Marg, avoiding the need to pass through Rajiv Chowk.

Rajiv Chowk has consistently recorded some of the highest footfall figures in the metro network. The station registered approximately 3.8 lakh daily passengers in 2025, compared to 3.7 lakh in 2024 and 3.5 lakh in 2023, highlighting the growing demand for alternative interchange options.

Construction of the corridor commenced on March 25, 2026. The stations are being designed to accommodate six-coach trains, ensuring sufficient capacity to meet future passenger demand. DMRC officials stated that the project will substantially improve connectivity to key government institutions, judicial complexes, memorials, and convention facilities located within the Central Vista district.

Major landmarks that will benefit from direct metro connectivity include Kartavya Bhavan, India Gate, National War Memorial, Delhi High Court, Baroda House, Supreme Court of India, and Bharat Mandapam. The enhanced access is expected to support both daily commuters and visitors to these important national destinations.

To support operations, a dedicated metro depot is also planned near Majlis Park. Upon completion, the expanded Magenta Line will extend to approximately 88.4 kilometres, making it the longest corridor in the Delhi Metro network. The line will operate as a fully driverless route from Botanical Garden to Inderlok, strengthening connectivity between Noida, South Delhi, and Central Delhi.
