Spain: Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Família Basilica reached a historic milestone on 10 June 2026 as Pope Leo XIV blessed and inaugurated the newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ, marking the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudí’s death.

Rising to 172.5 metres (566 feet), the tower is now the tallest church tower in the world and completes the central vertical composition envisioned by Gaudí more than a century ago. The ceremony attracted tens of thousands of worshippers, pilgrims, architects, and visitors from around the world, transforming Barcelona into the centre of global attention.
The inauguration formed part of the official centenary commemorations honouring Gaudí, who devoted more than four decades of his life to the basilica. During a solemn Mass, Pope Leo XIV described the Sagrada Família as an “architectural masterpiece” and highlighted the power of beauty, art, and faith to bring people closer to God.
Designed by the visionary Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, the basilica is renowned for its nature-inspired forms, tree-like columns, intricate façades, and innovative structural systems. Gaudí drew inspiration from natural geometry and catenary arches, creating a structure that continues to be admired by architects and engineers worldwide.
The completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ was made possible through advanced engineering techniques, including prefabricated stone components and modern structural technologies that helped realise Gaudí’s complex vision while maintaining the building’s architectural integrity.
Despite the completion of its tallest tower, the basilica remains unfinished. Work continues on the monumental Glory Façade and associated urban interventions, with overall completion now expected around 2035.
Construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882 and has continued through wars, financial challenges, and technological transitions. Today, it stands not only as a symbol of faith but also as one of the world’s most remarkable examples of long-term architectural and engineering achievement.
The inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ represents a defining moment in the basilica’s history, bringing Gaudí’s dream closer than ever to completion while reaffirming its status as one of the most significant architectural landmarks of the modern era.
