DDA Begins 90-Day Restoration Drive for 77 Lakes and Ponds in Delhi

Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority has initiated a major restoration campaign to rejuvenate 77 neglected lakes and ponds across the national capital within the next 90 days. The move comes following directions issued by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu amid increasing concerns over the degradation of Delhi’s water bodies due to encroachment, sewage discharge, and long-term neglect.

According to officials, the restoration programme will be carried out in phases, with six water bodies targeted for revival within 30 days, 48 within 60 days, and the remaining 23 larger sites within 90 days. The initiative focuses on restoring the ecological health and water-retention capacity of lakes and ponds before the onset of the monsoon season.

The first phase of the project will involve excavation, dredging, desilting, and clearing blocked drainage channels. DDA officials noted that many water bodies have lost their natural capacity to store rainwater due to years of silt accumulation, debris dumping, and urban encroachment. Restoration work will also include reviving natural inflow channels to improve groundwater recharge and rainwater harvesting.

In the second phase, DDA plans to focus on long-term conservation and public integration of these restored ecosystems. Measures will include strengthening embankments, plantation drives, installation of fencing to prevent dumping, and beautification of surrounding areas. The authority also plans to establish sewage treatment plants (STPs) and decentralised sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) at several locations to stop untreated wastewater from entering the water bodies.

During the review meeting, the Lieutenant Governor described Delhi’s lakes and ponds as “invaluable environmental assets” essential for groundwater recharge, climate resilience, and ecological balance. He directed officials to ensure strict adherence to timelines and accelerate implementation of restoration works.
