New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has floated a major civil works tender for a 4.94-km underground section of the upcoming Central Vista Metro corridor, covering twin tunnels and four underground stations in central Delhi.
The EC-04 package extends from beyond Kartavya Bhawan station towards Indraprastha. According to the tender documents, the package includes underground stations at India Gate, War Memorial–High Court, Baroda House and Bharat Mandapam.
The scope of work includes the design and construction of twin up and down-line tunnels using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), along with complete station structures, pedestrian subways, entry and exit structures and associated civil works. The contractor will also undertake station boxes, concourse and platform levels, ventilation and utility areas, drainage systems, pump rooms and auxiliary facilities, besides structural provisions for signalling, telecommunications and other Metro systems.
DMRC issued the tender on 25 September, with bids scheduled to close on 9 November. The contract has a stipulated completion period of 42 months, or 1,260 days.
A notable engineering challenge involves the proposed TBM construction sequence. The tender documents specify that India Gate and Baroda House stations cannot be used for TBM launching or retrieval. Consequently, the TBMs will have to pass through these station locations before being launched or retrieved from designated shafts and adjoining stations.
This construction sequence could require temporary tunnel segments to be installed through the station areas during tunnelling and subsequently removed to facilitate construction of the permanent station structures. The package also includes pedestrian subways, which may be constructed using cut-and-cover, box-pushing or New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) techniques, depending on site conditions and road constraints.
The 4.94-km package forms part of the 9.913-km RK Ashram Marg–Indraprastha corridor, being developed as an entirely underground extension under Delhi Metro Phase V(A). The corridor will comprise nine stations in total, providing Metro connectivity to key government, institutional and public destinations across the Central Vista area. (Swarajya)
