INTACH to Host Lecture Series on “Military Heritage of India” in New Delhi from May 12

The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has announced a three-day lecture series titled “Military Heritage of India”, aimed at exploring India’s rich military past through discussions on heritage, archaeology, technology, and cultural memory. The lectures will be held from May 12 to May 14, 2026, at the Multipurpose Hall, INTACH, 71 Lodhi Estate, New Delhi.

The series will bring together historians, conservation experts, archaeologists, and cultural researchers to discuss various aspects of India’s military heritage and its significance in contemporary heritage discourse.

The first lecture, scheduled for May 12 from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM, is titled “Fortified Systems across India: World Heritage Listings and the Maratha Military Landscapes.” The session will be delivered by Dr Shikha Jain, Chairperson of DRONAH Foundation. The lecture is expected to focus on India’s fortified landscapes, conservation efforts, and the growing recognition of military architecture in global heritage frameworks.

On May 13, Dr Tejas Madan Garge, Archaeologist and Director of Archaeology and Museums, Maharashtra, will speak on “Origin and Diffusion of Gunpowder Technology in India: An Archaeological Perspective.” The lecture will examine the historical development of military technology and its archaeological evidence across the Indian subcontinent.

The concluding lecture on May 14, titled “Beyond the Battlefield: Military Heritage in India’s Cultural Memory,” will be delivered by Ananya Bhattacharya, Co-Founder and Director of Banglanatak dot com. The session will explore how military history continues to influence cultural narratives, collective memory, and heritage interpretation in India.

According to INTACH, the event is open to all and will also include tea sessions after the lectures, encouraging interaction among scholars, professionals, and attendees interested in heritage conservation and military history.

The lecture series highlights the growing academic and cultural interest in documenting and preserving India’s military heritage, including forts, battlefields, military technologies, and associated cultural traditions.
