New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to conduct a comprehensive safety audit of all public parks across the national capital and submit a compliance report within one week.
The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting attended by the Delhi Police Commissioner, MCD Commissioner and Vice-Chairman of the DDA. The audit will examine key safety and maintenance parameters, including adequate lighting, security arrangements at entry and exit points, regular patrolling, cleanliness, sanitation and waste management.
The Lieutenant Governor also directed the Delhi Police to strengthen beat patrolling in and around parks, with regular visits by beat constables and local police station in-charges. Reports on the meeting also stated that Pink Police personnel would be deployed around park premises as part of the enhanced patrolling measures.
Focus on Park Maintenance and Community Participation
Alongside security measures, the directions include exploring arrangements under which Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and private corporate entities could participate in the maintenance and upkeep of public parks.
The civic agencies have also been asked to engage nearby schools and colleges, seek feedback from educational institutions and explore the involvement of students and youth groups in maintaining neighbourhood green spaces.
The citywide review follows the recent alleged sexual assault of a minor at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Temple in southeast Delhi. According to reports, the incident prompted authorities to review safety arrangements in parks across the capital. Delhi Police said that three accused had been arrested in connection with the case.
The audit is expected to provide civic agencies with a citywide assessment of existing park infrastructure, security arrangements and maintenance standards, while the one-week compliance deadline places emphasis on an early review of deficiencies. (ANI)
