Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu Inaugurated, Boosting Guwahati’s Cross-River Connectivity

Assam | Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu across the Brahmaputra River, marking a significant milestone in Assam’s transport infrastructure. The new bridge is set to strengthen mobility between the north and south banks of Guwahati, easing congestion on existing crossings and improving regional accessibility.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister underscored the project’s role in enhancing economic efficiency, reducing travel time, and supporting urban expansion in the Guwahati metropolitan region. The bridge is expected to streamline movement of goods and commuters, benefiting trade corridors and industrial clusters in and around the city. Improved cross-river connectivity is also projected to reinforce last-mile linkages to highways and feeder roads, enabling smoother intra-state and inter-state transport.

Beyond its logistical impact, the inauguration carries cultural significance. The improved route will facilitate easier access for devotees travelling to the revered Kamakhya Temple, one of the country’s prominent Shakti Peethas. Officials noted that better accessibility could provide a boost to pilgrimage tourism, hospitality, and allied service sectors.

Infrastructure analysts view the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu as part of a broader push to modernize connectivity in the Northeast, focusing on resilient engineering, economic integration, and balanced urban growth. With today’s inauguration, the bridge is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping Guwahati’s mobility framework and accelerating development across the Brahmaputra corridor.
