Poor Alterations and Blocked Drainage Worsened Lansdowne Building, Says IIT Roorkee
A committee from IIT Roorkee has informed the Supreme Court that Mysuru’s historic Devaraja Market and Lansdowne Building can still be restored and conserved because of their significant heritage value. However, the committee warned that years of unscientific alterations and poor maintenance severely damaged the structures.

According to the report, additions such as mezzanine floors, reinforced cement concrete (RCC) elements, steel components, incompatible cement plaster, waterproofing materials, and blocked drainage outlets accelerated the deterioration of the Lansdowne Building. The committee observed that these interventions disturbed the original material compatibility and moisture balance of the heritage structure.
The IIT Roorkee team also stated that much of the damage could have been avoided through proper maintenance and scientific conservation methods. It recommended removing the non-engineered additions during restoration to bring the buildings back to their original architectural and structural form. The report further stressed the need for long-term maintenance and accountability after restoration work is completed.
On the condition of Devaraja Market, the report noted that nearly 70 percent of the vertical structural components, including walls and columns, are experiencing only mild to moderate distress and can be repaired using suitable conservation measures. However, the traditional Madras-terrace and jack-arch roofing systems are in critical condition, with around 75 percent of the roofing area requiring urgent intervention.
The committee also highlighted localized cracks, dampness, corrosion, and spalling in RCC extensions added to the rear eastern block of the market. It recommended targeted rehabilitation measures to preserve the integrity of the historic complex.
The findings once again underline the importance of scientific heritage conservation practices in protecting India’s historic urban structures from irreversible damage.
