New Delhi | The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has revived plans to redevelop the historic Town Hall in Chandni Chowk through a heritage-led approach aimed at transforming the landmark into a vibrant cultural and tourism hub. The proposal seeks to create a public space for recreation and cultural engagement while preserving the site’s architectural and historical significance. The initiative gained momentum following a recent visit by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who suggested redeveloping the complex in collaboration with the Delhi government and operating it under a revenue-sharing model.
To move the project forward, MCD has written to the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC), requesting technical guidance on heritage redevelopment and tourism promotion strategies. Officials stated that expert inputs will help prepare a framework for restoring the building and integrating it into Delhi’s cultural tourism network.
Built between 1860 and 1863 in a mid-colonial architectural style, the Grade-A heritage structure served as MCD’s headquarters from 1866 until 2012 and occupies a 13,735 sq m site comprising three buildings. The complex has remained largely vacant since then, with only limited repair works undertaken before the G20 Summit. Authorities now aim to undertake extensive conservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse to revive the 162-year-old landmark as a major public destination showcasing Delhi’s history and heritage.
If implemented successfully, the redevelopment could reintroduce the iconic Town Hall as a prominent cultural node in the historic Chandni Chowk precinct.
