Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh | India has achieved another major cultural milestone as the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee. The announcement was made by UNESCO on Saturday, recognizing Sarnath’s outstanding universal value as one of Buddhism’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations.

According to UNESCO, Sarnath is the revered site where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon in the 6th century BCE after attaining enlightenment and gathered his earliest disciples. Identified by the Buddha himself as one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites, Sarnath evolved over centuries into a flourishing centre of Buddhist learning and spirituality under royal, monastic, and lay patronage.
The newly inscribed serial property includes the architectural and archaeological remains of ancient stupas, temples, monasteries (viharas), and other religious structures that reflect the site’s historical significance. UNESCO noted that Sarnath flourished as a major Buddhist centre before declining during the 12th century CE. The site remained largely forgotten until its rediscovery through archaeological excavations in the 18th century.
Today, the protected archaeological remains are preserved in two archaeological zones and continue to attract pilgrims, scholars, historians, and tourists from across the world. The recognition is expected to further strengthen heritage conservation efforts while enhancing Sarnath’s global visibility as a cultural and spiritual destination.
UNESCO announced the inscription through its official social media channels, describing it as a “new inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List” during the ongoing World Heritage Committee meeting.
The inscription reinforces India’s rich cultural legacy and adds another globally recognized heritage property to the country’s growing list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is also expected to boost heritage tourism in Uttar Pradesh and support ongoing conservation initiatives led by the Archaeological Survey of India.
