UIA Launches 2026 Guidebook for the 2030 Agenda at World Congress of Architects in Barcelona

Barcelona | The International Union of Architects (UIA), through its United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals Commission (SDGC), has officially launched the 2026 UIA Guidebook for the 2030 Agenda during the UIA World Congress of Architects held in Barcelona. The publication highlights the vital role of architecture, urban planning and design in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UIA launches the 2026 Guidebook for the 2030 Agenda at the World Congress of Architects in Barcelona.

The guidebook features a carefully curated collection of architectural projects, urban and territorial plans, landscape architecture, and design initiatives from across the globe. These projects demonstrate how the built environment can contribute practical and innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including climate action, social inclusion, resilient communities, biodiversity conservation, cultural heritage protection, and the responsible use of natural resources.

According to the UIA, the publication builds upon previous editions and reflects the diversity of architectural practice across different geographical, cultural and professional contexts. It aims to showcase how architects are helping shape a more sustainable future through responsible and inclusive design.

The 2026 edition is the outcome of the 2025 International Call for Proposals, which invited architects and multidisciplinary teams worldwide to submit projects addressing one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative was designed to provide a global overview of contemporary architectural practice while encouraging knowledge exchange and promoting sustainable design approaches.

Beyond serving as a showcase of exemplary projects, the guidebook is intended to become a valuable reference for students, educators, policymakers and architecture professionals seeking practical examples of how design can contribute to sustainable development. By presenting real-world case studies from multiple disciplines, the publication reinforces architecture’s growing role in addressing environmental, social and economic challenges through thoughtful planning and innovation.

The launch of the guidebook at the UIA World Congress further underscores the profession’s commitment to supporting the United Nations 2030 Agenda and fostering international collaboration in creating healthier, more resilient and inclusive communities.
