The AMRUT Centre of Urban Planning for Capacity Building (ACUPCB) at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is organising a two-day Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Water and River Sensitive Urban Development on 5–6 February 2026. The programme will be held at the Continuing Education Centre (CEC), IIT Roorkee, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Jointly organised with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), the FDP is designed for faculty members, researchers, and government officials engaged in urban planning, architecture, environmental studies, and public policy.
Building Capacity for Water-Sensitive Cities
The program focuses on strengthening academic and pedagogical capacity to integrate water- and river-sensitive approaches into urban education and professional practice. Water bodies and river systems play a critical role in urban resilience, public health, biodiversity conservation, and climate adaptation. However, Indian cities are increasingly vulnerable to flooding, water scarcity, pollution, and ecological degradation.
In this context, the FDP emphasises the need to embed Water Responsive and Sensitive Urban Design (WRSUD) principles into planning frameworks, policy-making, and urban design processes.
Key Learning Outcomes
Participants will gain:
- A conceptual understanding of water- and river-sensitive urban development
- Exposure to nature-based solutions and blue-green infrastructure strategies
- Practical tools for integrating WRSUD principles into teaching, curriculum development, and research
- Insights into aligning urban development with river conservation and climate resilience goals
The programme aims to enable educators to shape future urban professionals who are committed to sustainable, resilient, and ecologically responsive urban development.
