The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has highlighted the successful completion of the Kailashahar Water Body Rejuvenation Project in Tripura, showcasing it as an example of how restoring urban water bodies can enhance climate resilience while creating cleaner and more accessible public spaces.

Sharing the project on social media as part of the #CatchTheRain campaign, MoHUA stated that the rejuvenated water body has been developed by the Kailashahar Urban Local Body (ULB) under AMRUT 2.0, transforming a previously underutilized urban pond into a well-maintained community asset. The redevelopment includes improved embankments, pedestrian-friendly surroundings, seating areas, protective fencing, landscaped open spaces, and enhanced public access.
The initiative reflects the broader objectives of AMRUT 2.0, which emphasizes sustainable urban infrastructure, water security, and the conservation of urban blue-green assets. By restoring existing water bodies, cities can improve groundwater recharge, reduce urban flooding risks, enhance biodiversity, and create healthier recreational spaces for residents.
The Kailashahar project also demonstrates how urban water body rejuvenation contributes to building resilient cities in the face of climate change. Besides improving environmental quality, such projects strengthen community engagement by converting neglected spaces into accessible public amenities.
MoHUA noted that the restored water body represents a practical example of integrating environmental conservation with urban development. As Indian cities continue to expand, similar initiatives are expected to play a significant role in promoting sustainable urban growth while preserving natural ecosystems.
The project has been featured by the Ministry as part of its efforts to encourage cities across the country to restore lakes, ponds, and other traditional water bodies under national urban development programmes.
