The National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students helps reduce financial barriers to doctoral research and higher education.
New Delhi: Financial assistance under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme is helping Ajay Kumar, a 33-year-old scholar from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, pursue his PhD despite financial challenges, according to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Before receiving the fellowship, Kumar faced difficulties managing the educational expenses associated with doctoral studies due to limited family resources. The financial constraints made it challenging for him to continue his academic journey while meeting the requirements of higher education and research.
His fellowship assistance began in January 2024 and includes fellowship support, House Rent Allowance (HRA) and contingency assistance. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the reported amount of assistance availed by Kumar is ₹40,700.
The financial support has helped ease the burden of educational expenses and improve his access to resources required for research. It has also enabled him to devote greater attention to his academic responsibilities and doctoral work.
Kumar has reported improvements in his academic performance and ability to concentrate on research since receiving assistance under the scheme. The support has also strengthened his confidence and outlook towards future career opportunities as he works towards completing his PhD and establishing a successful professional career.
The NFSC Scheme aims to support students from Scheduled Caste communities in pursuing advanced studies by providing financial assistance for higher education. Kumar’s experience highlights the role of targeted educational support in reducing economic barriers and helping scholars from financially constrained backgrounds continue their research.
The case also underscores the importance of financial assistance in promoting access to doctoral education, strengthening research participation and enabling students to work towards their long-term academic and professional goals.
