Vadodara: Indian Railways has approved ₹166.5 crore for the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri in Vadodara Division of Western Railway. The project will be implemented on a cost-sharing basis with the State Government, with both sides contributing approximately ₹83.28 crore each.
The proposed ROB is intended to augment road connectivity in an important part of Vadodara and address limitations of the existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB) near Vadodara Railway Station. The existing RUB provides an east-west connection between the Alkapuri and Kalaghoda areas but has a vertical clearance of only around 3 metres. This restricts the movement of larger vehicles and has also resulted in recurring waterlogging during the monsoon.
According to the Ministry of Railways, these limitations have contributed to traffic congestion, operational difficulties and inconvenience for road users. The proposed four-lane grade-separated facility is expected to increase the capacity and functionality of the existing road-crossing arrangement.
The new ROB will provide an improved crossing facility without disturbing railway operations. It will also strengthen connectivity to Vadodara Railway Station, the GSRTC Bus Station and the upcoming High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Station, making it an important link within the city’s transport network.
The project has been proposed in response to growing traffic requirements in the area. The traffic assessment records peak-hour traffic of more than 1,600 passenger car units (PCU) per hour, along with multiple traffic conflict points and inadequate pedestrian facilities. The existing RUB has therefore become inadequate for present and projected traffic demand.
The four-lane ROB is expected to address these functional limitations while improving road connectivity around Vadodara Railway Station. The project will also provide a more effective grade-separated crossing arrangement in place of the existing constrained RUB.
