Hyderabad: A new Vehicle Underpass (VUP) has opened to traffic at My Home Avatar Junction, a major traffic merging point in Hyderabad, with the facility expected to reduce congestion and improve the efficiency of U-turn movements during peak hours.
The underpass, which opened on September 17, is expected to divert a significant portion of vehicles away from the busy junction and reduce waiting times for commuters travelling towards Kokapet, Narsingi and the Financial District.
According to K. Chandrasheker Reddy, ACP (Traffic), Madhapur, approximately 33,000 vehicles pass through My Home Avatar Junction from the Nanakramguda side between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. during the morning rush. This translates to around 11,000 vehicles an hour, or more than 180 vehicles every minute. Traffic volumes during the evening peak are also expected to be similar.
The junction serves as a convergence point for traffic from Manikonda, Puppalaguda, Khajaguda and the IT corridor, with a large number of commuters heading towards the Financial District and surrounding growth areas.
Underpass to reduce U-turn-related congestion
Traffic officials said that around 25% to 30% of vehicles moving through the junction during peak periods make a U-turn. Peak traffic periods are reported to be between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the morning and 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the evening.
Before the underpass opened, vehicles making U-turns had to wait at the main junction alongside through-traffic, contributing to queues and slowing overall traffic movement. The new VUP is expected to separate this movement from the main traffic stream.
According to the traffic police, crossing the stretch normally takes around five to six minutes, while travel time can double during peak periods. Vehicles making U-turns could face waiting times of approximately eight minutes.
The new underpass is expected to particularly benefit commuters travelling from Manikonda, Puppalaguda and Khajaguda towards Kokapet, Narsingi and the Financial District.
Further U-turn arrangements planned
Traffic authorities are also considering additional measures to improve traffic flow at the junction. K. Chandrasheker Reddy said that efforts are being planned to make the junction effectively waiting-free through additional U-turn arrangements, although the process will take time.
The opening of the VUP represents an infrastructure intervention aimed at separating turning movements from through-traffic at one of the key junctions connecting Hyderabad’s expanding residential and IT corridors.
