NDLS Redevelopment to Shift Key Trains to Anand Vihar, Nizamuddin During Major Upgrade

New Delhi’s ambitious redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) is expected to significantly alter train operations in the coming years, with several major trains likely to be shifted temporarily to Anand Vihar Terminal, Hazrat Nizamuddin, and other nearby stations during construction work.

According to reports, the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has begun preparatory work for the large-scale modernization project, which aims to transform NDLS into a world-class multi-modal transport hub by 2030. The redevelopment work is expected to continue in phases over the next three to four years.

As part of the transition plan, around 30 trains may initially be shifted from NDLS in the coming months, while nearly 100 trains could eventually be relocated to ease congestion and maintain operational efficiency during construction.

Several premium and long-distance trains, including Shatabdi Express services, may originate or terminate at Anand Vihar and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations. Trains heading towards Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and southern India are expected to be among the routes affected.

Railway officials stated that the relocation plan is being designed to minimize inconvenience to passengers while ensuring uninterrupted redevelopment work. Additional passenger facilities, parking spaces, segregated arrival-departure systems, elevated road connectivity, and underground passenger subways are also part of the proposed modernization plan.

The NDLS redevelopment project is expected to increase passenger handling capacity from nearly 4.5 lakh passengers daily to around 7 lakh passengers per day after completion. The upgraded station will feature airport-style infrastructure, retail spaces, waiting lounges, and improved circulation areas aimed at enhancing commuter experience.

The redevelopment will be executed in three phases covering platforms 1–5, 6–10, and 11–16 respectively, with railway authorities emphasizing that train operations will continue alongside construction activities.
