The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has opened applications and nominations for ANANT, a national initiative aimed at identifying and recognizing unprotected heritage sites across India that possess exceptional cultural, historical, architectural, natural, or community significance.

Despite India’s rich and diverse heritage landscape, many historically important structures, cultural precincts, traditional settlements, natural heritage zones, and community spaces continue to remain outside formal conservation and protection frameworks. Through ANANT, INTACH seeks to bring attention to these overlooked sites and facilitate their recognition as Heritage Sites of National Importance.
The initiative invites participation from individuals, researchers, architects, historians, educational institutions, conservation professionals, and local communities who wish to nominate deserving heritage sites from their regions. The program emphasizes the importance of documenting and preserving places that contribute to India’s collective memory, identity, and architectural legacy, even if they are not currently protected under government heritage laws.
The campaign poster highlights a wide range of heritage typologies — including historic cinemas, painted havelis, bridges, and ancient fortifications — symbolizing the diversity of India’s unrecognized heritage assets. INTACH believes that community participation and local knowledge are essential for safeguarding these places for future generations.
According to the announcement, nominated sites may include:
- Architectural landmarks
- Historic urban precincts
- Cultural landscapes
- Natural heritage locations
- Community heritage spaces
- Traditional settlements and structures
The last date for application submission is 31 May 2026. Interested participants can scan the QR code provided in the official announcement brochure to access nomination details and application procedures.
The initiative reflects a growing national conversation around inclusive heritage conservation, where not only monument-scale structures but also everyday cultural environments and local histories receive recognition and protection.
