PM Narendra Modi to Flag Off New Amrit Bharat and Express Train Services from Tiruchirappalli

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off a series of new train services from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu on 11 March 2026, marking a major step toward strengthening rail connectivity across southern and eastern India. The initiative includes the launch of two Amrit Bharat Express trains, two Express trains, and a passenger train, along with another passenger service from Ernakulam in Kerala. The newly introduced services are expected to benefit millions of passengers across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Jharkhand by providing improved and more affordable long-distance travel options through Indian Railways.

One of the key announcements is the Podanur–Dhanbad Amrit Bharat Express, which will establish a direct rail connection between Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and Dhanbad in Jharkhand. Originating from Podanur Junction, the train will stop at Coimbatore Junction before continuing through major rail corridors including Salem, Renigunta, Vijayawada, Jharsuguda, Ranchi, and Bokaro. The weekly service will depart Podanur every Saturday and reach Dhanbad by Monday morning, with the return journey beginning from Dhanbad on Mondays. The new train is expected to significantly reduce travel difficulties for migrant workers and families who previously had to rely on multiple train connections to travel between the industrial hubs of southern India and the mining regions of eastern India.

Another important addition is the Nagercoil–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, which will connect the southernmost region of India with the Deccan. The train will link Nagercoil in Tamil Nadu with Charlapalli near Hyderabad in Telangana, passing through more than twenty districts across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The service is expected to improve mobility for students, workers, and families traveling between the coastal districts near Kanyakumari and major urban centers such as Hyderabad, offering a direct and affordable transport option that previously required multiple train changes.

In addition to these Amrit Bharat services, two new express trains—the Rameswaram–Mangaluru Express and the Tirunelveli–Mangaluru Express—will enhance connectivity between Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. These trains will provide residents of the Coimbatore region with new direct travel options to Mangaluru and improve access for pilgrims traveling to Rameswaram, one of the most significant religious destinations in the country. The expanded rail network is expected to support tourism, trade, and regional mobility along India’s southern coastal corridor.

The expansion also includes regional passenger services such as the Mayiladuthurai–Thiruvarur–Karaikkudi passenger train, which will improve connectivity across the agriculturally important Cauvery Delta districts including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, and Sivaganga. Another service between Palakkad in Kerala and Pollachi in Tamil Nadu will offer a direct electric rail connection benefiting daily commuters, traders, students, and patients traveling across the state border.

Alongside the new train services, three railway stations in Kerala—Shoranur, Kuttippuram, and Changanassery—will be inaugurated as redeveloped stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The stations have been upgraded with modern passenger amenities including improved platforms, lifts, escalators, and free Wi-Fi, with redevelopment carried out at a cost of approximately ₹52 crore. In addition, the 65-kilometre Shoranur–Nilambur railway line electrification project in Malappuram district will be dedicated to the nation, enabling faster, cleaner, and more efficient rail operations.

The Amrit Bharat Express trains are designed as affordable long-distance services featuring sleeper and general class coaches, Divyangjan-accessible compartments, improved interiors, and push-pull locomotive technology capable of speeds up to 130 km/h. Built under the Make in India initiative, the network of Amrit Bharat Express trains has steadily expanded since its introduction in 2024. With the addition of the newly launched services, the total number of Amrit Bharat Express trains operating across India will increase to 58, further strengthening the country’s railway connectivity and supporting the broader vision of inclusive infrastructure development.
