Mumbai: “Aadi Chitra”, a National Tribal Painting Exhibition, opened today at the P. L. Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy, Prabhadevi, Mumbai, marking the beginning of a vibrant celebration of India’s tribal art and cultural heritage.

Organized by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, in collaboration with the Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd. (TRIFED), the exhibition is being held under the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada (1–15 November 2025) to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Dharti Aaba Bhagwan Birsa Munda — a symbol of tribal pride and freedom.
The inauguration ceremony, held this afternoon, was graced by Prof. Dr. Ashok Uike, Hon’ble Minister of Tribal Development, Government of Maharashtra, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED.
The week-long exhibition will remain open to the public from 10th to 16th November 2025, between 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM, offering visitors an immersive experience into the country’s diverse tribal art traditions.
Featuring over 100 tribal artworks, Aadi Chitra showcases the creative brilliance of indigenous communities across India, including:
- Warli Paintings from Maharashtra
- Saura and Pattachitra Art from Odisha
- Gond and Bhil Art from Madhya Pradesh
- Pithora Paintings from Gujarat
Each artwork reflects the harmonious bond between nature, spirituality, and community life, narrating stories rooted in ecological wisdom and ancestral traditions.
Guided by Hon’ble Minister of Tribal Affairs Shri Jual Oram, the Ministry and TRIFED continue their mission to preserve and promote tribal art, while empowering artisans through livelihood opportunities, entrepreneurship, and national exposure.
As India prepares to observe Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on 15th November 2025, Aadi Chitra stands as a living testament to the resilience, creativity, and heritage of the nation’s tribal communities — celebrating their enduring contribution to India’s cultural mosaic.
