NBCC Begins Construction of Iconic 1.2 km Skybridge at Bharat Vandana Park

New Delhi: The NBCC (India) Limited has commenced construction of a 1.2 km-long spiral-shaped pedestrian skybridge at Bharat Vandana Park in Dwarka, southwest Delhi. The striking structure—rising up to 45 metres—is designed to be the park’s central architectural landmark, offering visitors a 360-degree panoramic view of Dwarka.

Supported by nine sculptural pylons resembling giant trees, the bridge will serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. The base structures have already been completed, with work now progressing on the upper segments that will carry the elevated walkway.

According to NBCC’s design brief, the skybridge will be 3.5 metres wide, connecting the pylons at an 18-metre elevation and gently rising to 19 metres at the midspan. The pylons are categorized into three types—six Type A (with internal pedestrian ramps), two Type B (with lifts and ramps), and a single Type C pylon that will soar to 45 metres, featuring an observatory deck and viewing lounge.

Visually, the pylons will take the form of tubular steel “tree trunks” wrapped in leaf-like aluminium panels, creating a dynamic interplay of structure and skin. The underside of the bridge will feature reflective stainless steel panels, producing a “mirror ribbon” effect that ties the design elements together. At night, the bridge will illuminate with a synchronized lighting system, giving the impression of a floating necklace of light over the park.

The ₹23.3 crore project, which includes the design, fabrication, erection, testing, and commissioning of the bridge, has a nine-month completion timeline. Earlier delays occurred as clearance from civil aviation authorities was required due to the height and proximity to the airport—approval was granted earlier this year.

Once complete, the bridge will connect the diverse zones of Bharat Vandana Park, a 200-acre cultural and ecological destination being developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The park will feature themed gardens, open-air theatres, food courts, craft bazaars, and a “Mini India” zone showcasing scaled-down replicas of monuments from across the country.

The foundation stone of Bharat Vandana Park was laid by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in December 2019. While initial timelines have been extended, the DDA has now set July 2025 as the revised completion target for NBCC.
