In a significant move to strengthen industry-academia collaboration and nurture future infrastructure professionals, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, has invited applications for its Summer Internship Programme 2026.
According to an official release by the Press Information Bureau, the two-month internship is scheduled to be conducted between May and July 2026, tentatively from 4 May to 5 July 2026, depending on academic calendars.
The programme builds on the success of NHAI’s earlier internship initiatives, including the winter internship and ongoing six-month internship, aimed at providing students with hands-on exposure to India’s national highway development ecosystem.
Expanded Disciplines and Eligibility
The 2026 summer internship has been expanded significantly to include both technical and non-technical disciplines. Students from the following fields are eligible:
- Engineering: Civil, IT, Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, Electrical, Instrumentation, AI/Data Science
- Non-Technical: Law (BA LLB), Commerce, Sciences, Management (HR, Finance, Marketing), Mass Communication, Library Science
Eligible applicants must be full-time undergraduate or postgraduate students from reputed institutions, including those ranked under the NIRF, top law universities, and leading management and media institutes.
Stipend, Location & Mentorship
Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend of ₹20,000 and a certificate upon successful completion. Interns will be placed at NHAI Headquarters in New Delhi or designated field offices, working under experienced officials for practical exposure.
Application Process and Deadline
Applications are to be submitted through the official NHAI Internship Portal. Students must provide academic and personal details and can indicate location preferences. Importantly, applications must be verified and approved by their respective institutions to be considered for selection.

Strengthening Workforce for Infrastructure Sector
The earlier phase of the programme saw strong participation, with 244 civil engineering students in the winter internship and 149 students in the six-month programme. The expansion reflects NHAI’s commitment to building a skilled workforce aligned with India’s growing infrastructure needs.
This initiative underscores the government’s continued focus on capacity building, skill development, and practical training, ensuring that future professionals are well-equipped to contribute to the country’s highway development sector.
