The Government of India has announced significant progress under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), with 3.11 crore rural houses completed against a cumulative target of 4.18 crore houses allocated to States and Union Territories since the scheme’s inception. A total of 3.92 crore houses have been sanctioned, while 1.06 crore houses remain to be completed.
According to the Ministry of Rural Development, during 2025–26 (up to June 2026), 33.54 lakh houses were sanctioned and 35.54 lakh houses were completed, including houses sanctioned in previous years. In Jharkhand, 1.48 lakh houses were sanctioned and 68,000 houses completed during the same period.
The Ministry stated that delays in house completion are primarily due to beneficiaries’ unwillingness, migration, disputes over succession, delays in land allotment for landless families, pending financial confirmations in State IFMIS, elections, and shortages of construction materials. It added that the Centre regularly reviews implementation with States and Union Territories to address bottlenecks and expedite construction.
Under PMAY-G, eligible beneficiaries receive ₹1.20 lakh for house construction in plain areas and ₹1.30 lakh in North-Eastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh. The scheme also converges with other flagship programmes, providing ₹12,000 for toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin, wage support through MGNREGS, piped water under Jal Jeevan Mission, electricity connections, LPG under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, and inclusion of women beneficiaries in Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
At the national level, PMAY-G has facilitated 3.10 crore toilets, 2.45 crore water connections, 3.08 crore electricity connections, 2.91 crore LPG connections, and linked 1.35 crore beneficiary households with SHGs through convergence initiatives.
The government has approved Phase II of PMAY-G until March 2029 to complete an additional 2 crore rural houses. Measures to accelerate implementation include timely fund releases, dashboard-based monitoring, regular progress reviews, workshops with States and Union Territories, and rural mason training programmes.
