Pimpri Chinchwad :The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved the construction of three new box-structure underpasses along the Pune–Bengaluru Highway (NH-48) at Punawale and Tathawade. The project is expected to improve local connectivity and reduce chronic traffic congestion affecting thousands of daily commuters.

According to officials, the tendering process has already commenced, and construction work is expected to begin on priority. The project is estimated to cost between ₹70 crore and ₹80 crore. The proposal reportedly received approval two weeks ago and was reviewed by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari during his recent visit to Pune.
The new underpasses are being planned to address growing traffic bottlenecks on NH-48 and its service roads. Existing underpasses in the area have struggled to accommodate rising vehicular volumes due to rapid urban development in Punawale, Tathawade, Wakad, Ravet, Kiwale, and nearby localities. Residents have long demanded additional crossing points, particularly as weekend congestion has become a recurring issue.
NHAI has opted for box-structure underpasses because they can be constructed faster and more economically than conventional underpasses. The design requires less excavation and minimizes disruption to ongoing traffic during construction.
Local residents and civic representatives have welcomed the decision while emphasizing the need for future-ready infrastructure, wider service roads, and better drainage systems to address monsoon-related waterlogging. The project is also expected to improve connectivity for several villages linked to Pimpri Chinchwad and support the region’s continuing urban expansion.
