Gujrat: Demolition of the T3 building at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport has begun, marking the start of the airport’s largest terminal infrastructure expansion. The demolition is being undertaken to clear the site for a New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) as part of a phased redevelopment programme.
The redevelopment aims to increase Ahmedabad airport’s passenger-handling capacity to 2 crore passengers annually, compared with the combined capacity of around 1 crore passengers at the existing T1 and T2 terminals. The new facility is expected to become operational by 2029–2030.
According to information cited in the report, the first phase of the project is being developed on the site adjoining the existing domestic terminal and extending from the T3 side. With T3 demolition and excavation now underway, the site is being prepared for construction of the integrated terminal.
The NITB will bring domestic and international operations under one roof. The planned facility will include larger check-in areas, additional security checkpoints, expanded passenger lounges and DigiYatra infrastructure, aimed at facilitating smoother and faster passenger movement.
The project is estimated to cost more than ₹3,000 crore, based on submissions made by the airport operator to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA). The final project cost may vary. AERA officials have also recently reviewed the ongoing work and plans for the NITB during a visit to SVPI Airport.
The redevelopment will also involve changes to existing airport facilities. The GujSAIL terminal is proposed to be relocated to another site to create space for the NITB, although this relocation is planned for the project’s second phase.
The expansion is intended to accommodate projected passenger growth and strengthen Ahmedabad’s long-term international connectivity. The report also notes that Ahmedabad is scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, adding to the city’s future infrastructure requirements. TOI
