Sunder Nursery Garden House to Showcase India’s Biodiversity

Delhi’s Sunder Nursery is set to introduce a new ‘Garden House’ project aimed at showcasing India’s diverse biodiversity and strengthening its role as a major urban ecological space. The initiative will feature three distinct ecological zones—subtropical, desert, and local scrub landscapes—bringing together over 100 regional plant and tree species from across the country.

Designed by noted architect Ashok B Lall, the indoor facility will function as a learning centre, offering students and visitors insights into India’s natural heritage while creating an immersive “forest within a garden” experience. The project is expected to further enhance the Nursery’s ecological and educational value.

Originally developed during the early 20th century, Sunder Nursery has evolved into a prominent urban park through restoration efforts led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Alongside the announcement, a book titled Gardens Within A Garden was released, documenting the site’s transformation and conservation journey.

Officials highlighted that the Garden House aligns with broader goals of sustainable urban development, balancing ecological preservation with public engagement. With over 1.6 million annual visitors, the addition is expected to further strengthen the Nursery’s position as a key green corridor in the capital.
