In a major boost to India’s rail infrastructure, Indian Railways has approved the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train between Mumbai and Bengaluru. The announcement, confirmed through an official communication by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw dated April 5, 2026, marks a significant step toward transforming long-distance travel in the country. The development gained traction after Bengaluru Central MP P. C. Mohan shared the official approval, highlighting the introduction of a modern sleeper service connecting KSR Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

At present, train journeys between Mumbai and Bengaluru take approximately 21–23 hours via conventional express services such as the Udyan Express. However, the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to reduce travel time significantly to around 15–17 hours, making rail travel far more competitive with air travel. Designed to elevate passenger experience, the train will feature fully air-conditioned sleeper coaches, advanced suspension systems for smoother rides, ergonomically designed berths, and a capacity of around 823 passengers. With operational speeds of up to 180 km/h, the service aims to redefine overnight train journeys by combining speed with premium comfort.
The proposed route is expected to pass through key junctions including Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Guntakal, enhancing connectivity across Maharashtra and Karnataka, particularly benefiting the Kalyana Karnataka region. The train is likely to operate daily with two rakes—one from each city—ensuring efficiency and frequency for both business and leisure travellers. This will be India’s second Vande Bharat Sleeper service and part of a broader plan by Indian Railways to introduce around 12 such trains by the end of 2026.
The Mumbai–Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper represents a shift in how Indians perceive rail travel. No longer limited to affordability alone, modern trains are increasingly focusing on comfort, efficiency, and overall experience. By offering a faster, reliable, and comfortable alternative to flights, this new service is expected to become a preferred choice for intercity travel, reinforcing Indian Railways’ vision of next-generation mobility.
