Indian Railways is preparing to launch the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, marking a major step forward in the modernisation of long-distance rail travel. Designed to make overnight journeys faster, safer and significantly more comfortable, the new sleeper version combines advanced technology with passenger-centric amenities at affordable fares.

The inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper service is expected to operate on the Howrah–Guwahati corridor, a vital rail link connecting eastern and north-eastern India. All trials, testing and certification processes have been successfully completed, and the train is set to be flagged off soon. This route is widely used by students, professionals, migrant workers, traders and families, and the new service is expected to substantially enhance connectivity and travel experience across the region.
Designed specifically for long-distance overnight travel, the 16-coach train has a total passenger capacity of 823 and is capable of operating at speeds of up to 180 kmph. Its aerodynamic design and advanced suspension system ensure a smoother, quieter and more stable journey while reducing travel time. Ergonomically designed sleeper berths offer improved body support, allowing passengers to rest comfortably during long journeys.
Passenger convenience has been prioritised through ample and well-planned luggage spaces, including overhead racks, under-berth storage and dedicated areas near coach entrances for larger suitcases. Modern toilets with advanced sanitation systems, USB charging ports, Divyangjan-friendly facilities, modular pantries and enhanced fire safety features further improve onboard comfort and safety.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is also equipped with CCTV surveillance in all coaches, automatic doors with vestibules, emergency talk-back systems and the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system, reinforcing Indian Railways’ focus on safety and reliability. Dedicated cabins and improved facilities have also been provided for loco pilots and onboard staff to reduce fatigue and ensure efficient operations.
Once operational, the train is expected to complete the Howrah–Guwahati journey in around 14 hours, nearly three hours faster than the existing fastest service. With indicative fares lower than air travel, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is positioned as a cost-effective premium alternative that blends speed, comfort and safety. Region-specific onboard cuisine reflecting Assamese and Bengali tastes will further enhance the travel experience.
With its passenger-focused design and future-ready technology, the Vande Bharat Sleeper represents a significant shift in India’s approach to overnight rail travel, reinforcing the vision of Indian Railways to make rail the preferred choice for long-distance journeys across the country.
