New Delhi: The National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will undertake a comprehensive Survey on Migration across the country from July 2026 to June 2027. The exercise aims to provide updated estimates on migration rates, patterns, and the socio-economic conditions of migrant households.
Since its establishment in 1950, the National Sample Survey (NSS) has played a central role in generating official data on a range of socio-economic indicators. Migration has remained an important area of study, with dedicated rounds carried out in 1955, 1963–64, and 2007–08. More recent information has come from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) and the Multiple Indicator Survey (2020–21).
The forthcoming survey will collect information on rural–urban and inter-state migration, reasons for migration, duration of stay, return migration, and the employment and income profiles of migrants. It will also examine the impact of migration on the households left behind. The data is expected to offer crucial insights for policies related to labour mobility, urbanisation, housing, transport, social security, and skill development.
To strengthen the survey design, the NSO has released the draft questionnaire and concept note for public consultation. Researchers, institutions, and members of the public have been invited to send their feedback in the prescribed format by 30 November 2025.
The draft documents and feedback form are available on the MoSPI website.
