New Delhi: The national launch of Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025 took place 17 SEP 2025 at Delhi’s Bhalswa dumpsite, one of the capital’s largest and oldest landfill sites. Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal spearheaded the campaign, formally adopting the 70-acre site for complete remediation and transformation into a sustainable urban space.

The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), aims to accelerate the clean-up of the legacy dumpsite, which has been in use since 1994. The Minister announced that 25 acres have already been remediated, with 5 acres converted into bamboo plantations and 20 acres dedicated to sanitation activities and waste processing.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to improving urban living conditions, Shri Manohar Lal announced a ₹5,000 Diwali bonus for SafaiMitras, beldaars, truck drivers, and other workers engaged at Delhi’s three landfill sites under MCD and private agencies. Regular health check-ups will also be conducted for these workers to ensure their well-being.

The campaign also saw the Minister and MoHUA Secretary Shri S. Katikithala planting saplings as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, furthering the site’s green transformation. He reiterated his personal oversight through frequent site visits and monitoring of progress.
Launched jointly by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, the SHS 2025 campaign is part of the broader Swachh Bharat Mission. The fortnight-long Swachhotsav drive will focus on:
- Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) such as dark and neglected spots.
- Visible cleanliness in high-intensity public spaces.
- Remediation of legacy dumpsites.
- Eco-friendly festival celebrations.
- SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivirs for worker safety.
Across India, over 6 lakh CTUs have already been identified for targeted action with active participation from states, local bodies, Gram Panchayats, youth groups, NGOs, civil society, and citizens.
The Bhalswa dumpsite adoption marks a landmark step in transforming waste-laden spaces into clean, liveable urban environments, setting a strong precedent for cities nationwide.
