Project Anantha Set to Revamp Thiruvananthapuram International Airport

Thiruvananthapuram: Development works under the ambitious Project Anantha are set to commence soon, giving a major boost to the modernization of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The first phase, valued at ₹600 crore, is expected to begin within the next few weeks.

This phase will focus on airside development, covering the planning, design, and construction of operational zones such as runways, taxiways, aprons, Air Traffic Control (ATC) facilities, hangars, and fire & rescue infrastructure. The project, initially awarded to ITD Cementation India, has been subcontracted to Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS).

According to airport sources, preliminary works will start within two weeks. Key components include the reconstruction of the Terminal 2 apron, upgraded drainage systems for better monsoon resilience, additional check-in counters at Terminal 1, and the creation of a Knowledge Centre.

“With the airside contract now awarded, we are ready to enter the most technically demanding phase of Project Anantha,” said a source close to the project.

Larger Airport Expansion Plan

Project Anantha forms part of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd.’s ₹1,300-crore investment plan, aimed at transforming the airport’s infrastructure and boosting its annual passenger handling capacity from 3.2 million to nearly 12 million. The investment is supported by $750 million in external commercial borrowings, earmarked for upgrades across six airports, including Thiruvananthapuram.

City-Side Development Still Pending

While airside development moves ahead, city-side expansion—which includes an underground parking facility, a five-star hotel, improved access roads, and new commercial and logistics zones—remains on hold due to pending environmental clearance. The delay follows the expiry of the term of the State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) earlier this year.

A public hearing by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board is scheduled for Tuesday, a crucial step toward obtaining clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to move forward with the city-side projects. toi
