New Recreational and Social Space Planned Along Najafgarh Drain in Dwarka

In a renewed push toward urban rejuvenation, the Delhi government is planning to develop a 21-acre plot near the Najafgarh drain in Vipin Park, Dwarka, into a vibrant community recreational and social space. The initiative, spearheaded by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FC), reflects the administration’s broader vision of creating a riverfront development along the 57-km-long Sahibi River, now known as the Najafgarh drain.
This project is aligned with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s earlier announcement to transform stretches of the Najafgarh drain into accessible and engaging public spaces. While this is not the first attempt to rejuvenate the water body — a similar effort in 2022 under the AAP-led government had allocated ₹705 crore toward the river’s revival — the current plan aims to deliver more concrete outcomes with visible community benefits.

The I&FC Department has already floated a tender to appoint a consultant for planning and designing the space. The proposed amenities include a water fountain, walking tracks, an outdoor gym, children’s play areas, and a cricket ground, offering recreational options for all age groups. Additionally, the Chhath Ghat at ITO, located along the Yamuna, will also be upgraded as part of the broader proposal.
Officials confirmed that the design and cost estimation will be finalized within three months. Structural drawings will undergo proof-checking by premier institutions such as IIT-Delhi, IIT-Roorkee, or Delhi Technological University, ensuring quality and safety standards.
The Najafgarh drain, which enters Delhi from Dhansa and merges with the Yamuna near Wazirabad, is one of the capital’s major pollution sources. With over 22 open drains flowing into the Yamuna, the project holds promise not only as an urban design intervention but also as a step toward environmental betterment.
