New Delhi: The Ministry of Tourism celebrated World Tourism Day 2025 on Saturday with the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, highlighting India’s commitment to cultural exchange, inclusive growth, and eco-friendly practices in tourism.

The event was graced by Shri Suman Bery, Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, as Chief Guest, and Shri Suresh Gopi, Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum & Natural Gas, who presided over the celebrations. The programme reflected the UNWTO theme, emphasizing the role of tourism in shaping a sustainable future for Viksit Bharat 2047.
Speaking at the event, Shri Bery noted that tourism goes beyond leisure, calling it “a powerful instrument for economic transformation, environmental stewardship, and social inclusion.” He stressed the importance of embedding sustainability at the core of India’s tourism strategy and underlined the need for convergence across transport, urban development, digital technology, and infrastructure.
The Minister of State for Tourism highlighted government schemes such as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 and PRASHAD, which promote eco-friendly tourism, rural and village-based initiatives, and the use of digital platforms. He also emphasized India’s investment in airports, railways, highways, and waterways to strengthen connectivity and ensure seamless travel experiences.
Key announcements included the launch of the Project Management Information System (PMIS) for real-time monitoring of tourism projects and the release of the 66th edition of the India Tourism Data Compendium, showcasing record tourist arrivals and economic contributions. A booklet on MUDRA Loans for Homestays was also introduced to support small-scale tourism entrepreneurs.
The Ministry also signed MoUs with Netflix, Atithi Foundation, and leading OTAs. The Netflix collaboration will showcase Indian destinations through cinematic storytelling, while partnerships with Atithi Foundation and OTAs aim to boost research, innovation, and visitor feedback mechanisms.
Panel discussions at the event featured senior officials from aviation, railways, highways, and shipping ministries, who emphasized the need for multimodal connectivity. Case studies such as Mahakumbh 2025 and the Statue of Unity were presented, along with insights on AI, AR/VR, and digital tools for enhancing visitor experiences.
The celebration reaffirmed India’s resolve to make tourism a driver of sustainable and inclusive development, while positioning the country as a global leader in responsible tourism. PIB
