Noida International Airport Set to Begin Operations by Late 2025, Targets 6 Million Passengers in First Year

Noida: The long-awaited Noida International Airport (NIA) is nearing completion and is expected to commence operations by the fourth quarter of 2025, marking a major milestone for aviation in the Delhi-NCR region. In its debut year, the airport aims to handle around six million passengers, with plans to expand into one of India’s largest aviation hubs over time.

According to NIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Christoph Schnellmann, all aeronautical infrastructure is now ready, and the passenger terminal roofing has been completed. Technical installations and finishing work are currently underway, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is installing and testing equipment for the air traffic control tower.

Trial Runs and Readiness Programme

The airport has entered the crucial Operational Readiness, Activation and Transition (ORAT) phase, involving trial runs, simulations, and training sessions for airlines, ground handlers, and other stakeholders. Key systems such as baggage handling, security screening, check-in counters, and boarding gates are undergoing rigorous testing to ensure smooth operations. Full-scale terminal trials began in July to evaluate passenger flow and system integration.

Cargo, Fuel and Tariff Updates

Alongside passenger facilities, the cargo terminal is nearly complete and will soon begin ORAT procedures. Commissioning of the fuel farm and hydrant system is also scheduled to start shortly.
The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has released an interim tariff order for NIA. Outbound domestic passengers will pay a User Development Fee (UDF) of ₹490 plus taxes, while international departures will be charged ₹980. Arriving domestic passengers will pay ₹210, and international arrivals ₹420, plus taxes. This tariff is effective until 31 March 2026 or until revised.

Long-Term Vision and Connectivity

In its first phase, NIA will operate with one runway and a single terminal capable of serving 12 million passengers annually. With all four development phases completed, the airport is projected to handle 70 million passengers every year, positioning it among India’s largest airports.

Though the project faced delays due to material sourcing challenges—missing earlier deadlines of 2024 and April 2025—connectivity plans are progressing. IndiGo is expected to be the first airline to operate from NIA under a Memorandum of Understanding, while several international carriers have also shown interest.

A New Gateway for Northern India

Once operational, Noida International Airport will significantly enhance travel options in Delhi NCR, offering modern facilities, expanded capacity, and improved global connectivity. With its strategic location, the airport is poised to become a key gateway for millions of travellers in the coming years.
