Mumbai: The city has gained a major new public space with the opening of a 5.25-km stretch of the Coastal Road promenade, inaugurated on Independence Day. This marks Mumbai’s longest seafront since Marine Drive, developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under the Mumbai Coastal Road Project.

The newly opened promenade stretches between Priyadarshini Park–Haji Ali and Love Grove–Worli, offering walking spaces ranging from 8 to 20 metres wide along with a sea-facing parapet. Pedestrian access is provided through underpasses, with four subways now operational at Akriti Park near Bhulabhai Desai Road, Vatsalabai Desai Chowk near Haji Ali, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Marg, and Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk. Each subway is equipped with staircases and ramps, ensuring accessibility for wheelchair users and cyclists. Designed as a public-friendly space, the promenade features cycling and jogging tracks, shaded seating, landscaped green zones, garbage bins, and leisure areas. To support visitors, two parking facilities with a capacity of 198 cars each are being constructed at Bindu Madhav Thackeray Junction and opposite Worli Dairy.

Coastal Road Access and Safety

The Mumbai Coastal Road will now remain open 24 hours a day, with speed limits of 60 km/h inside tunnels and 80 km/h outside. The entire stretch is monitored by CCTV cameras, and a dedicated control room is in place for traffic and emergency management.

Authorities have emphasized that pedestrians should use only the subways to access the promenade, as vehicles are not permitted to stop or halt along the Coastal Road.

A New Waterfront for the City

This is the first major seafront promenade in South Mumbai since Marine Drive, built in the 1930s. When complete, the Coastal Road promenade will span 7.5 km, creating a new urban landmark for leisure, fitness, and community activities.
