In a strategic move to harness India’s 7,500 km coastline and 14,500 km of potentially navigable waterways, the Government of India is rapidly advancing its flagship Sagarmala Programme, overseen by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The scheme aims to catalyze port-led development by improving infrastructure, enhancing logistics efficiency, and fostering economic growth along the coastal regions.

As of now, 121 projects with a combined cost of ₹9,415 crore have been undertaken under the Sagarmala Scheme for partial financial assistance. Of these, 77 projects have already been completed, marking significant progress in modernizing port facilities and promoting multi-modal connectivity.
The projects span key areas including:
- Port infrastructure and coastal berth development
- Road and rail connectivity to ports
- Construction of fishing harbours
- Cruise terminals and Ro-Pax ferry services
- Skill development and coastal community upliftment
This development effort aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP), which integrates infrastructure planning across various ministries and state governments for seamless execution.
