In a major boost to rural housing development, the Government of India has extended the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) until 2028-29, approving the construction of 2 crore additional pucca houses for eligible rural households. This decision continues the government’s commitment to achieving “Housing for All” in rural India.
Launched on 1st April 2016, PMAY-G aims to provide financial assistance to households living in kutcha or dilapidated homes, enabling them to construct safe, permanent houses equipped with basic amenities.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development, as of July 29, 2025, the following progress has been made:
- 4.12 crore houses have been allocated to States and Union Territories under Phase I and II.
- 3.84 crore houses have been sanctioned.
- 2.81 crore houses have already been constructed and handed over.
The scheme uses data from the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 and the Awaas+ 2018 survey to identify deserving beneficiaries. The government has also updated the Permanent Wait List (PWL) to include all eligible households.
To ensure transparency and accountability, PMAY-G mandates:
- Geo-tagging of house construction progress using the AwaasApp.
- Uploading time- and date-stamped photos at each stage of construction, from the initial site verification to final completion.
- So far, 3.84 crore house sites have been geo-tagged before the final sanctioning.
The scheme will now target full saturation of the updated Awaas+ list and PWL by March 2029.
