CBI officials arrest MCD Deputy Commissioner in Delhi bribery case

The accused has been identified as Lt Col Abhishek Kumar Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Shahdara North zone in Delhi. According to CBI officials, the agency received credible information indicating that Mishra, along with Accounts Officer Divyanshu Gautam, had demanded a bribe from a License Inspector in exchange for official favours. Acting swiftly on the complaint, the CBI registered a case and laid a trap to catch the accused in the act.

During the operation, both officials were apprehended red-handed while allegedly accepting the bribe amount. Preliminary investigations suggest that the case may involve deeper layers of corruption within the civic administration, and further inquiries are currently underway. The CBI has indicated that additional details regarding the case will be disclosed as the investigation progresses.

In a separate but related development highlighting ongoing anti-corruption efforts, a special CBI court in Thane, Maharashtra, recently sentenced a former Income Tax officer to six months of rigorous imprisonment in a 19-year-old bribery case. The court also imposed a fine of ₹4,000 on the convicted officer, Deenanath Krishna Puthran, who was found guilty of accepting ₹20,000 to expedite a tax assessment process. The case, which dates back to 2007, underscores the prolonged nature of corruption trials and the importance of sustained legal action.

These developments reflect intensified efforts by investigative agencies to address corruption within public institutions. The arrest of a senior MCD official is likely to have administrative and governance implications in Delhi, particularly in the functioning of municipal services and licensing systems.
