Centre Enhances Inland Waterways Infrastructure with ₹6,833 Cr Investment
New Delhi – In a major push towards sustainable and efficient transportation, the Government of India has sanctioned a substantial investment of ₹6,833.46 crore over the past five years to bolster infrastructure development across the National Waterways network. This initiative is expected to transform inland water transport into a viable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional modes.

The largest allocation, ₹5,061.15 crore, supports the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP I & II), spanning the Varanasi-Haldia stretch on National Waterway-1 (Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system). The project benefits key states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal and aims to streamline cargo movement and improve regional connectivity.
Key Infrastructure Projects:
Project | Allocation (₹ Cr) |
---|---|
JMVP-I & II (NW-1: Varanasi–Haldia) | 5,061.15 |
8 Hybrid Electric Catamaran Vessels | 144.00 |
NW-2 (River Brahmaputra, Assam) | 498.38 |
Approach Road & Ship Repair Facility, Pandu, Assam | 419.00 |
NW-16 Development | 134.72 |
Development of 23 National Waterways (Phase-1) | 266.09 |
Inland Waterway Infra Projects in Northeast | 100.00 |
Miscellaneous Projects | 210.22 |
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has also constructed floating terminals and community jetties along NW-1 to support farmers, fishers, and river-dependent communities. Notably, 60 community jetties are under construction to enhance local economic activity.
Furthermore, IWAI has partnered with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the construction of eight hybrid electric catamarans, reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to green and sustainable mobility. CSL has also delivered a hydrogen-fuelled vessel, already deployed at Varanasi.
The comprehensive development of NW-2 (Assam) and related infrastructure like the ship repair facility and approach roads to NH-27 at Pandu Port further exemplify the Centre’s focus on the Northeast region’s connectivity and economic integration.
Economic and Employment Potential
The Inland Water Transport (IWT) sector holds immense potential to generate employment and skill development in areas like river cruise tourism, vessel operations, terminal construction, maintenance dredging, and navigation systems. This investment not only promotes clean transportation but also drives regional development and employment. PIB
