New Delhi, May 29, 2025 – In a significant move to reduce traffic congestion and improve vehicular flow between Delhi and Gurugram, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)Dwarka Expressway has commenced the trial run of underpasses and a shallow tunnel on the Dwarka Expressway. This initiative, starting from May 29, 2025, aims to provide alternate and faster connectivity to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and nearby regions.

Trial Run Schedule and Key Features
The trial operations will take place daily from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, allowing authorities to monitor real-time traffic conditions, assess safety protocols, and evaluate infrastructure performance before full-scale commissioning. If all parameters are met satisfactorily, the tunnel and underpasses are expected to become fully operational by June 5, 2025.

Connectivity Highlights
The trial run includes:
- A shallow tunnel connecting Dwarka/Yashobhoomi to IGI Airport through newly constructed Airport Underpasses, and vice versa.
- Access from Dwarka/Yashobhoomi to Gurugram (Sirhaul side) via the shallow tunnel and a Right Turn Underpass.
- Connectivity from Terminal 3 of IGI Airport to Gurugram using a combination of underpasses.
These new links will serve as alternate routes to the IGI Airport and aim to significantly decongest the overloaded Delhi-Gurugram NH48 corridor.

Safety & Restrictions
The infrastructure has been built using state-of-the-art engineering techniques and includes:
- CCTV surveillance across the stretch.
- A dedicated control room for real-time monitoring.
- Emergency exits for swift evacuation during contingencies.
To maintain safety, the tunnel will have a height restriction of 4.5 meters. Entry will be prohibited for:
- Two-wheelers and three-wheelers
- Slow-moving vehicles
- Vehicles carrying flammable substances (e.g., oil tankers)
Impact on Delhi-NCR Connectivity
This project is part of NHAI’s broader strategy to enhance urban mobility across the National Capital Region. Once fully operational, the tunnel and underpasses will:
- Offer faster and more reliable routes between Dwarka, Vasant Kunj, and Gurugram
- Improve traffic flow toward Sonipat, Panipat, and Chandigarh
- Provide better road connectivity for commuters from Faridabad and Manesar heading to northern India
The infrastructure is expected to divert a substantial volume of vehicles from surface roads, reducing traffic snarls and commute times while enhancing road safety.
