New Delhi: New Year announcement, Indian Railways has confirmed the launch of the country’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, which will operate between Guwahati and Howrah. The development was announced by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw at a meeting held at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi.

The minister stated that the sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat train has successfully completed all stages of trials, testing, and safety certification. The inaugural service on the Guwahati–Howrah route is expected to be flagged off later this month by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a major milestone in India’s passenger rail modernisation programme.
Designed specifically for overnight journeys, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will be configured with 16 coaches, including 11 three-tier AC coaches, four two-tier AC coaches, and one first-class AC coach, with a total passenger capacity of approximately 823. The train will benefit several districts across Assam and West Bengal, including Kamrup Metropolitan, Bongaigaon, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah.

According to the Railways Ministry, the train features a newly designed bogie system with advanced suspension to enhance ride comfort and reduce noise. Interiors have been ergonomically planned, with improved berths, redesigned ladders, automatic doors, and vestibules to ensure safe and smooth passenger movement. The train is also equipped with the KAVACH safety system, CCTV surveillance in all coaches, emergency talk-back units, aerosol-based fire detection and suppression systems, and special facilities for Divyangjan passengers.
The service timetable will be structured to allow departure in the evening and arrival at the destination early the next morning, offering a faster and more comfortable alternative to conventional overnight trains. Passengers will also experience region-specific onboard catering, with Assamese cuisine served on departures from Guwahati and traditional Bengali dishes offered on services originating from Howrah.
The launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train signals a new phase in Indian Railways’ passenger-centric reforms, combining semi-high-speed travel with modern amenities, enhanced safety, and improved regional connectivity. Officials noted that 2026 is set to be a year of major transformation for Indian Railways, with several similar initiatives planned across the network.
