In a major push to strengthen India’s port-led infrastructure and logistics network, the Government of India has approved a ₹472 crore Road Over Bridge (ROB) project at Tuna-Tekra. The project, sanctioned by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), aims to significantly enhance cargo evacuation efficiency and improve connectivity to upcoming port facilities.
The approved project includes the construction of a Road Over Bridge along with extensive supporting infrastructure such as viaduct structures, a bridge over a creek, and associated road systems. Additionally, a long-term maintenance plan spanning 10 years has been incorporated to ensure durability and operational efficiency of the infrastructure. This ROB is strategically planned to act as the primary connectivity corridor for the Tuna-Tekra port, facilitating smooth and uninterrupted movement of heavy cargo traffic.
The infrastructure will play a critical role in supporting the upcoming Mega Container Terminal, which is designed with a handling capacity of 2.19 million TEUs, as well as a Multipurpose Cargo Berth with a capacity of 18.33 MMTPA. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce logistics turnaround time, improve supply chain efficiency, and eliminate existing rail-road bottlenecks, thereby enabling faster and more efficient cargo handling.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, highlighted that the project aligns with the government’s broader vision of transforming India into a global maritime powerhouse. He emphasized that strengthening port connectivity is a key pillar of India’s infrastructure development strategy under initiatives such as Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
The execution of the ROB will be closely synchronized with the development of the Tuna-Tekra Container Terminal, which is currently at 45 percent physical progress. This coordinated approach ensures that essential connectivity infrastructure will be ready alongside port operations, preventing future congestion and operational delays.
