Shravasti Highway Project: ₹6,969 Cr NH-927 Boosts Connectivity

In a significant infrastructure push aimed at enhancing religious tourism and regional connectivity, the Government of India has approved the construction of a 4-lane, access-controlled highway on the Barabanki–Bahraich stretch of National Highway 927 in Uttar Pradesh. The project is expected to transform access to Shravasti, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in the world.

Shravasti holds immense spiritual and historical value, as it is believed to be one of the places where Gautama Buddha spent several monsoon seasons and delivered key teachings. Despite its global importance, the region has long struggled with inadequate connectivity, limiting its tourism potential. The newly approved highway project aims to address this gap by providing faster, safer, and more efficient road infrastructure.

The 101.51 km-long highway will significantly reduce travel time between Barabanki and Bahraich by nearly 50%, bringing it down from approximately 150 minutes to just 75 minutes. Average vehicle speeds are expected to double from 40 kmph to 80 kmph, improving overall travel efficiency and comfort.

With a total investment of ₹6,969.04 crore under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), the project will also enhance multimodal connectivity by linking major national highways (NH-27, NH-330B, NH-730), state highways, railway stations, airports (including Lucknow and Shravasti), and logistics hubs across the region. This integrated approach is expected to facilitate smoother movement for both domestic and international tourists.

The project is strategically aligned with boosting Buddhist tourism, especially attracting pilgrims from countries such as Thailand, Sri Lanka, Japan, and Myanmar, which share deep cultural and spiritual ties with India’s Buddhist heritage. Improved accessibility is expected to significantly increase tourist footfall in Shravasti.

Beyond tourism, the highway is poised to generate substantial economic benefits for the region. It is estimated to create over 36.54 lakh person-days of direct employment and 43.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment. Additionally, the corridor will connect key economic, social, and logistics nodes, including Special Economic Zones (SEZs), mega food parks, and aspirational districts.

Major towns such as Barabanki, Ramnagar, Jarwal, Kaisarganj, Fakharpur, and Bahraich will benefit directly from improved infrastructure, leading to better trade, mobility, and regional development.

Overall, the NH-927 project represents a strategic investment in infrastructure that not only strengthens connectivity but also unlocks the cultural and economic potential of eastern Uttar Pradesh, positioning Shravasti as a globally accessible spiritual destination.
