Jaipur Metro Phase-2 Approved: ₹13,037 Crore North–South Corridor to Transform City Mobility

The Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi has approved the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, marking a major step toward strengthening sustainable urban mobility in Rajasthan’s capital. The ambitious project involves the development of a 41 km-long North–South corridor from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, comprising 36 stations, at an estimated cost of ₹13,037.66 crore. It will be implemented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, ensuring coordinated execution and funding support.

Jaipur Metro Phase-2 North-South corridor connecting airport and key urban areas in Jaipur

The proposed corridor is designed to significantly enhance connectivity across Jaipur by linking major residential, industrial, and institutional zones such as Sitapura Industrial Area, VKI Area, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar. The project also includes underground metro stations in the airport zone, enabling efficient multimodal integration. Importantly, Phase-2 will seamlessly integrate with the existing Phase-1 East–West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, creating a unified and continuous metro network across the city.

At present, Jaipur Metro Phase-1 caters to an average daily ridership of around 60,000 passengers on its 11.64 km stretch. With the addition of Phase-2, ridership is expected to increase manifold, significantly boosting the share of public transport while reducing dependency on private vehicles. The project is anticipated to ease traffic congestion, lower vehicular emissions, and improve overall urban mobility, benefiting residents, daily commuters, and tourists alike.

The project has undergone comprehensive appraisal at multiple levels, including Inter-Ministerial consultations and Public Investment Board evaluation, and has demonstrated strong economic viability with an Economic Internal Rate of Return exceeding 14 percent. It aligns with key policy frameworks such as the Metro Rail Policy, 2017, Rajasthan TOD Policy-2025, and proposed Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority reforms. The funding structure includes equity contributions from both central and state governments, along with subordinate debt and multilateral financing. Targeted for completion by September 2031, Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is expected to play a pivotal role in transforming Jaipur into a modern, transit-oriented and future-ready city, contributing to the broader vision of sustainable urban development in India.
