Gurugram: The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) plans to complete utility shifting, site clearance and road preparation before commencing the main civil construction of Phase 2 of the Gurgaon Metro project. The approach aims to minimise traffic disruptions and avoid construction delays along the proposed 14.2-km corridor connecting Sector 9 with Cyber City.
The decision follows delays experienced during Phase 1, when utility relocation was undertaken gradually after the award of the civil construction contract. The process affected progress, particularly along the 2.2-km stretch between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bharadwaj Chowk. For Phase 2, GMRL intends to complete essential preparatory work separately so that the main civil contractor can begin construction at sites cleared of utilities and other obstructions.
According to a senior GMRL official, the preparatory package will include the relocation of water, sewerage, stormwater and gas pipelines, along with other utilities that obstruct the metro alignment. The scope will also cover site clearance, removal of debris and unsuitable soil, dismantling temporary structures, road construction and footpath development.
Traffic diversions and a comprehensive traffic management plan will also be prepared to maintain vehicle movement during construction. Trees and other obstructions will be cleared wherever necessary.
The preparatory work is estimated to cost ₹62.2 crore and is scheduled for completion within nine months. The initiative is particularly important because the corridor passes through densely populated neighbourhoods, where several roads are 30 metres wide or narrower. Limited road space, existing trees and heavy traffic will require carefully planned diversions and road-widening measures at selected locations.
₹1,662-Crore Civil Construction Package
Earlier in October 2026, GMRL initiated the process of engaging an agency for the main civil construction package, covering the elevated viaduct and stations between Sector 9 and Cyber City. The Phase 2 civil works are estimated to cost ₹1,662 crore, with a completion period of 30 months from the award of the contract.
The corridor will feature 13 stations, including two flyover-cum-metro structures spanning approximately 1.2 km on Old Delhi Road and 800 metres on Bajghera Road.
Once operational, the extension is expected to improve connectivity between Old Gurugram’s residential neighbourhoods and major employment centres in Udyog Vihar and Cyber City. The corridor will serve Sectors 7, 4, 5, 3, 22 and 23A, along with Ashok Vihar, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar and Palam Vihar Extension.
The stretch will eventually form part of a 28.5-km metro network between Millennium City Centre and Cyber City. In May 2026, the Haryana government also approved an additional 1.8-km spur connecting Sector 5 with Gurugram railway station.
Meanwhile, approximately 30% of the civil construction work on Phase 1 of the Millennium City Centre–Cyber City corridor has been completed, with piling under way at several locations, including the stretches between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bharadwaj Chowk, and between Basai and Sector 10.
The decision to undertake utility relocation and road preparation in advance is intended to improve construction efficiency while helping manage traffic congestion along one of Gurugram’s key urban transport corridors.
