Meerut: The fifth phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which was earlier expected to be completed by October, is facing delays, with several key construction activities still incomplete. Based on the progress at the site, completion by December also appears unlikely, according to a report by Dainik Jagran.
The 14-km stretch includes important interchanges at Lohia Nagar and Zainuddinpur, along with road, bridge and ramp works. Construction has accelerated at some locations, particularly near the toll plaza, where ramps for uphill and downhill traffic have been constructed on the Churiyala and Kharkhoda-Mohiuddin routes. Girders have also been installed on the under-construction bridge, while soil filling on one side has connected the structure to the expressway. However, asphalt work is still pending and the Kharkhoda-Mohiuddin road remains closed to vehicular traffic under the bridge.
Progress at the Zainuddinpur interchange has been affected by ongoing farmer protests, while work at Lohia Nagar is proceeding at a slower pace. Another major obstacle is a high-tension electricity line at Talheta between Churiyala and Zainuddinpur. Although its shifting was expected by July 30, the work has not yet been completed, preventing soil filling in the affected section. Officials now plan to undertake the soil-filling work after the rains, followed by asphalt work.
Where asphalt work has already been completed, poles for cameras and signboards are being installed. However, pending interchanges, soil filling, asphalt work and other construction activities continue to affect the overall completion schedule.
Delhi-Meerut Expressway Phase 5: Expected Benefits
Once completed, Phase 5 is expected to provide a direct and convenient link to Delhi for residents of Shastri Nagar, Medical, Ganga Nagar, Defence Colony and Mawana. The route will also improve connectivity for Mawana, Parikshitgarh, Najibabad and Bijnor, while travellers from Pauri in Uttarakhand are expected to benefit from easier access to Delhi.
The new phase is also expected to help reduce traffic pressure on the Bijli Bamba bypass, improving regional connectivity between Meerut and Delhi. DJ
