CRSPL and IIT Roorkee Sign MoU to Advance Ropeway Technology for Urban Mobility

Roorkee | In a significant step toward sustainable urban transport innovation, Conveyor & Ropeway Services Pvt. Ltd. (CRSPL), a Kolkata-based engineering firm specializing in aerial ropeway systems, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. The collaboration aims to drive research and development in advanced ropeway technology, focusing on improving urban connectivity through environmentally sustainable solutions.

CRSPL and IIT Roorkee sign MoU for advanced ropeway technology development

The partnership will primarily explore CRSPL’s innovative CURVO technology, a non-linear ropeway system capable of navigating curves and bends without detaching from the cable. Unlike conventional ropeways that require straight alignments, CURVO enables seamless movement along road corridors, making it particularly suitable for dense urban environments where spatial constraints limit infrastructure expansion.

The academic and technical aspects of the collaboration will be led by faculty members from IIT Roorkee, including Prof. Vidit Gaur and Prof. Ravi Kumar. Their involvement will ensure rigorous research, design validation, and safety assessment of ropeway systems, aligning the project with global engineering standards.

According to Shekhar Chakravarty, Chairman of CRSPL, the partnership represents a strong industry–academia alliance aimed at integrating non-linear ropeway systems into mainstream urban transport. He emphasized the potential of ropeways as a clean, green, and efficient commuting alternative in rapidly urbanizing cities.

Beyond technology development, the MoU also focuses on fostering knowledge exchange, academic research opportunities, and industry exposure for students and scholars. By combining practical industry expertise with academic research capabilities, the collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to the evolution of aerial transport infrastructure in India.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable mobility solutions, reduce urban congestion, and introduce innovative transit systems that are both efficient and environmentally responsible.
