3.33 km Ahmedabad Metro Extension from GIFT City to Shahpur

Gujrat: The Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi has approved the extension of the existing North-South corridor of the Ahmedabad Metro from GIFT City to Shahpur. The 3.33-kilometre elevated stretch will include three new stations and is expected to be completed within four years.

Ahmedabad Metro North-South corridor extension from GIFT City to Shahpur approved by Union Cabinet in 2026

The project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹1,067.35 crore. Once operational, the extended corridor is projected to serve approximately 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, increasing to around 58,059 passengers by 2041.

The extension will significantly enhance connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region, facilitating smoother travel for business, employment, and education purposes. Major multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial hubs located along the corridor are expected to directly benefit from improved transit access.

The project will be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat.

Employment Generation and Network Integration

During the construction phase, the project is expected to generate approximately 1,000 jobs. Post-construction, around 250 personnel will be engaged in operations and maintenance, along with additional indirect employment opportunities.

Currently, the 68.28-km Ahmedabad Metro Phase-I (APMC to Motera Stadium – North-South Corridor and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam – East-West Corridor) and Phase-II (Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and GNLU to GIFT City) are operational with a total of 53 stations. Phase-I has been operational since September 2022, while Phase-II commenced operations in January 2026. The metro network currently records an average daily ridership of approximately 1.6 lakh passengers.

The newly approved extension is expected to further strengthen the integration of the Ahmedabad Metro network, improve last-mile connectivity, and support sustainable urban development in Gujarat’s financial and commercial growth corridors.
